A new pedestrian bridge with a high quality of stay from Schedifkaplatz to Hohenbergstraße: the MeidLine is to be a viewing, recreation and attraction area, create open space in the “third dimension” and overcome the divide created by two main roads and the Südbahn railway line.
Line+ does not just connect A and B; it creates a sustainable, resource-saving link between the Meidling underground station and the new security centre. What makes this bridge special is its simplicity and restraint. The necessary protective scaffold over the ÖBB tracks is not dismantled but kept and planted, with a concrete topping and a diagonal truss that also carries the bridge. The bridge also offers wide-ranging connections to two recreation areas, the Schönbrunn palace park and the Wienerberg recreation area. Two vertical connections from the bridge to the platform provide a step-free shortcut down to the green park. The green space is extended and a short route is created. At the end point by Meidling station, a small arena invites people to linger. The other end of the bridge is aligned directly with the historic sight line to the Gloriette. Line+ also convinces by completely separating pedestrians from car traffic. The design of the bridge follows a minimalist approach that blends harmoniously into its surroundings. The choice of materials takes sustainability and durability into account. The bridge becomes a symbol of modern mobility and urban life. Line+ becomes an architectural highlight in Meidling's cityscape. Its clear formal language and use of sustainable materials underline the project's contemporary design idea. The bridge will not only be a functional connection but also a place of encounter and exchange for the people around it. With seating, plants and art installations, Line+ becomes a place where the city and its residents connect.
