Eva is software that supports the early design phase in architecture and spatial planning. in an interactive process, different approaches are generated on the basis of an existing room programme or site parameters and checked for plausibility. before each step of detailing, variants are discarded and the best ones are taken further. compared with analogue design processes, eva captures many more plausible variants in a very short time. ultimately this makes it easier for the architect or planner to decide on a variant – so it is not seen merely as an optimisation task.
Eva was developed by Caramel and SWAP architekten with funding from the Vienna Business Agency.

residential tower in simmering together with heimspiel architektur!
the twelve-storey urban building stands on the central square of the new viennese residential quarter. the standard floor is designed with seven flats per floor and a through circulation zone as a multi-purpose communal area. the 79 flats are compact. the surrounding balcony zone in front is the defining layer that largely shapes the building's appearance. the characteristic folded flat-steel railing continues in defined areas as a trellis, so that the front layer is partly greened vertically. with prefabricated features (tables, privacy screens, planters) residents can design their private outdoor space individually, creating a lively façade that gives the building identity.

The The architecture film series at the Filmcasino in Vienna focuses on “Slum Cities” in autumn 2016.
The opening film is a vivid portrait of the artists' quarter Kathputli in New Delhi. Kathputli was set up as a temporary tent city in the 1950s and grew over the decades into the world's largest colony of street performers. When the authorities order its forced clearance, the filmmakers follow the magicians, acrobats and puppeteers for three years in their fight for their living space. Using this slum clearance in the Indian capital as an example, the film takes a stand against global gentrification.
With an introduction by the architect Dr. Ing. Jalil Saber-Zaimian (University of Vienna), followed by a panel discussion with the Austrian participants of the Venice Biennale 2016, the next ENTERprise, Caramel Architekten and Liquid Frontiers. Moderated by Helmut Weihsmann.

that architects place on materials and products. GÜNTER KATHERL, co-owner of CARAMEL ARCHITEKTEN in Vienna, whose office organised the Austrian contribution to the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale, talks about UNEXPECTED IDEAS and the versatility of material in his work.

For 280 refugees in a temporarily vacant open-plan office building, private space that each person could make their own was created with material costs of €50 and a set-up time of 5 minutes per person. From cheap ready-made products – parasol, construction-fence base, electrical conduit, push-fit plastic water pipes, curtain fabric, cable ties, clamp lamp and extension socket – Caramel Architekten developed a prototypical spatial structure, whose assembly was demonstrated to the refugees on site. Straight afterwards the children, women and men took possession of the structure for trial living and began sewing the first lengths of fabric into curtains on the sewing machines provided. Working together, one open-plan space after another was then transformed from an open mattress camp into flats with spatial structures adapted to each household (small family, extended family, flat share).
