Thought further, with respect
The school site is not reinvented but consistently built upon. The existing building remains the spatial and structural backbone of the school.
The appearance of the building on the south-east side remains unchanged, leaving the effect of the established urban ensemble untouched. The extension sees itself as an additional layer that clearly stands apart from the old building and complements it respectfully. It faces the courtyard and strengthens it as the centre that gives the complex its identity. Instead of demolition, generosity is created by adding – in dialogue with the existing building and with respect for the place.
A threshold between inside and outside
The schoolyard is strengthened and spatially framed as a shared open space. The new structure opens transparently towards the green space and enters into a direct dialogue with the outdoors. All existing trees are preserved, securing the quality of the established open space. The extension acts as a threshold between inside and outside – a climatic in-between space that creates visual connections, a pleasant place to be and orientation.
