completing the existing overarching path network
the existing network of conveyor belts, pipe routes and rail tracks seven metres above ground connects all parts of the zeche zollverein site. adapting this structure into footbridges has created an overarching path network independent of the ground-level infrastructure. the new dsz building sees itself as completing and extending the existing network of footbridges. network connection of the attractions: choreographic centre, design museum, historic colliery houses and design school
completing the footbridge network directly connects the most important new cultural institutions.
a ring connection is created from the design school, choreographic centre, design museum and the historic colliery houses as boarding house, back to the design school. at the design school, the footbridge level is the central access and starting point for the internal path network. the choreographic centre is crossed at gallery level, with a view into the large music hall. at the design museum, the footbridge level is also the foyer and exhibition level. the historic colliery houses, adapted as the dsz boarding house, are touched by the connecting bridge in the area of the semi-public lounges
