The existing AKH campus is extended by a new research building. The appearance of the new building reflects the efficient stacking of its functions and presents a varied, lively image to the outside. Above all, the greenery on the façade and roof and in parts of the interior is a striking feature of the building. It becomes the green lung of the AKH.

The central atrium extends over all levels; varied green zones, quiet zones and meeting zones increase informal exchange between users.

The requirements for the building are shaped by different uses. Grouping them in a linear arrangement gives great flexibility in dividing up the various room functions. Laboratories, ancillary rooms and offices can be moved, enlarged or reduced within the grid system.

The roof garden, as part of the “green lung”, is available as a recreational space for users and for patients of the adjacent clinic.

Heat recovery from laboratory exhaust air, free cooling combined with dry coolers, the compact building form and the photovoltaic system on the roof keep energy consumption as low as possible.
