For the “former post office site” in Böblingen, “The Good High-Rise” is proposed.
The building's small footprint and its position on the site make possible an urban square to the north-west, towards the station and Bahnhofstraße, and a city garden to the south.
The forecourt as a “hinge”, beginning and end of the urban axis Bahnhofstraße – “Unterer See”. “The Good High-Rise” is to be built mainly in timber and is divided into two sides:
To the north, facing the urban square and the (noisy) station, is the “city shelf”; to the (bright and quiet) south of “The Good High-Rise” are the homes. A mix of around 60% housing and around 40% public use is achieved.
A two-storey building to the south gives the site a well-placed end at the junction of Wilhelmstraße and Karlstraße. It is intended both to give the city garden more urban definition and to provide the additional infrastructure needed for a successful urban grandstand. It also contains
a shared kitchen and a workshop, with guest rooms above, open to all residents and also bookable externally. In addition, the day-care centre planned on the ground floor is to have a protected outdoor space in the sunny southern area.
The high-rise as a landmark and gateway to the city, 15 upper floors. H 52.50 m / L 52.50 m / D 22.60 m.
Between the units of the city shelf and the flats runs the access gallery, with planted voids linking the floors as a “front-garden and buffer zone” for the flats, as well as public terraces and communal areas as meeting zones.
