Superscape 2024 – Power Silo 010390
We acquired the derelict site of a former compound-feed factory, embedded in lush greenery and accompanied by an idyllic stream. After years of vacancy, nature has gradually reclaimed its terrain, and that is how it should stay. We analysed the building and are determined to make it energy self-sufficient: natural energy sources such as water, wind and sun are plentiful at this location.

But what to do with the energy generated that the building often cannot use at the same moment? It needs energy storage! And here we have perfect conditions to use gravity in the old silos and build a small gravity storage plant. A winch uses surplus electricity to lift heavy metal weights. When the house needs electricity, the weight slowly drops and generates energy again via a turbine. A building insulated with natural materials, openings optimised for orientation, and scaffold zones in front provide shading through solar panels and extensive greenery. This in turn promotes biodiversity and gives fauna new places too. Roofs are designed as retention roofs, providing additional natural cooling of the building. All these measures greatly reduce primary energy demand.

Creating self-sufficiency: solar and wind energy for electricity, aquathermal energy from the stream for heating/cooling, rainwater treatment for service water and even drinking water, and on-site wastewater treatment that returns clean water to the stream.

Our Power Silo is right next to a small Upper Austrian village affected by younger people moving away. Our buildings are meant to be understood, visible from afar, as a lighthouse project in which innovative technologies and synergies with nature are not in conflict.

In the low-rise building we create co-working areas, makerspaces and communication rooms to attract start-ups. The tower offers a few short-term flats for the young entrepreneurs. The Power Silo is meant to give new impetus to living and renewed growth in a small community.
