The new AHS Baden is a school that conveys built and lived sustainability to its users. It does so through careful use of its surroundings and resources, spatial flexibility, varied spaces that build community, and biodiversity you can experience.
Through its form and placement, the three-storey building fits harmoniously into the existing townscape and allows near-natural green spaces to be integrated all around it. By deliberately choosing a circle – striking in urban terms but without direction – a new centre is created as an “education hub” for the future Baden education campus. The form also gives the future school building a unique identity, highlights the key themes of sustainability and digitalisation through its construction and use, and creates a forward-looking school. The lush greenery of the surroundings extends over façade, roof and classroom gardens into the break-time garden of over 1,000 m². Together with the triple gym below it, this forms the heart of the school. The large (sports) hall is not only a central meeting point but is also flexible enough to meet different needs, from regular lessons to large events. On the ground floor the building appears inviting and open through its transparency, while on the upper floor flexible learning zones and open spaces create a sense of ownership and security.
