the design for the workshop and administration building of the upper austrian state government is the result of an invited design competition that caramel won in 2002.

contrary to the linear arrangement of functions envisaged by the client, caramel grouped all main functions in a u-shape around a transparent, covered inner courtyard.

the western wing houses the two-storey administration with the staff, changing and sanitary rooms; attached to it are the special workshops such as the sandblasting booth and paint booth.

at the end, as the link to the eastern workshop hall, is the two-storey store. the 20 m deep workshop hall can be driven into from both sides and is lit through glass-fibre-reinforced doors. the office wing at the very front of the courtyard completes the workshop area.

along its length, the building as a whole rises gently and at an angle out of the terrain – and in its imaginary extension, the 72 m long canopy roof, merges back into it.
