those who believed that rain is a present from the sky

will be taught better by caramel,

when this trio travels to Venice,

a cloud in their baggage and a serious

attitude to cool things down

once again the architects' group caramel attracts attention with a witty stunt. having once filled the columned hall of the mak with 50,000 balloons for a mak_nite under the motto “hot air”, on friday the trio provided some serious cooling down in vienna's museumsquartier.

they demonstrated their steerable rain cloud (approx. 8 m x 3 m, filled with helium). from 20 to 26 september at the architecture biennale in venice, it convinced the public that rain is no gift from heaven.

the cloud is the result of sophisticated research into the elements air (helium, oxygen), water and solid materials (pvc). after precise calculations, the plastic form was made by the specialist company schultes in vienna. the successful test flight took place in the museumsquartier on 17 september 2004 and produced “real” rain in bright sunshine.

in venice, too, the public was delighted by the unexpected refreshment in front of the austrian pavilion.

“as a team of architects with a strong bent for research and material experiments, always keeping the fun factor in mind, besides solid architecture we quite often come up with something like the cloud.”
