construction sequence of the self-build garage:

  • question: the simplest material? answer: ribbed reinforcing steel as the “bamboo of modern times”
  • model tests, empirical tests
  • although the steel manufacturer and tradespeople said it could not be built (nobody can bend 20 mm ribbed steel by hand!), the client trusts the design and insists on building it
  • rectangular tubes with pre-drilled holes are fixed to the foundation
  • galvanised ribbed steel bars (20 mm diameter) are tensioned by muscle power (10 kg) from hole to hole, i.e. from ground to ground: all bars are installed at their full arc length, because bending shorter bars is not possible
  • the net is spun to completion
  • the nodes are tied with cable ties (no welds!)
  • the bars are cut to the right length and the structure is brought into its final shape
  • the structure is covered with a truck tarpaulin
