designing an exhibition on the subject of architecture requires choosing and using design means so that they convey or present the exhibition content and do not compete with it.

designing an exhibition on nazi-era architecture – which is moreover still lived in and used every day – requires an even greater degree of sensitivity.

restraint and modesty, combined with a clear and non-arbitrary “appearance”, are the guiding principles of the exhibition design “hitlerbauten” at the linz city museum.

the walls of the exhibition rooms are kept largely free of exhibits and carry general information such as room texts, highlighted with spot lighting.

cubes in the material of the floor covering are grouped freely in the space.

the exhibits are placed on and against them and lit in a focused way with artificial light; in contrast, the rest of the room is kept dim.

the modesty of the chosen design means mentioned above is not only formal; in the spirit of “reuse” and “recycle”, elements from previous exhibitions such as acrylic display cases, object stands, monitors, glass panels and the like are used as far as possible.
