exactly 7 years after the europe-wide architecture competition, the completion of the third building of the science park temporarily completes the new, state-of-the-art, technically superbly equipped and architecturally spectacular campus centre of linz's johannes kepler university.
all that remains is the final completion with the still outstanding building 4.
but even without this future building, the university now has almost 45,000 m² of additional above-ground gross floor area for teaching and research, 15,000 m² in the newly completed building 3 alone.
as with the previous ones, the play with bends in plan and section of the volume, envelope and interiors continues seamlessly in this third building.
unlike the existing buildings, besides the usual special research rooms, seminar rooms and entrance hall, the base storey also houses lecture halls and a smaller branch of the canteen.
as in the earlier buildings, two parallel slabs rise from the base, housing offices and laboratories on 6 floors.
the defining feature inside remains the continuous internal atria, with generous glazing and spatially open areas as centres of communication.
the element linking all new buildings is a generously sized canopy roof that extends from building to building across the whole science park site and, together with the special-room façades and the seating steps behind, creates usable open-air auditoriums – once again a place of encounter and communication.
