the buildings take up the main directions of the surrounding buildings and so integrate perfectly into their surroundings.
towards baumgasse, the court stands as a solitaire and forms the visual and physical boundary to the prison.
the prison is a perimeter block set back inwards by a security zone of at least 10 metres.
the workshop and administration wing is placed along the a23, with the bus station below it, to protect the inmates from motorway traffic noise.
the whole complex is one storey lower in the south-west to let more light into the courtyard. this missing storey can be added for future extensions.
the roof areas are used as open spaces. on the court building, the roof garden serves the training centre as an extended training and exercise area. on the prison, the roof offers the inmates 2 sports pitches and extra open space to
set up activities such as running or similar.
the functions inside are reflected by a colour code on the façade, creating a colour gradient across the whole building complex.
the small-scale façade lets the necessary bars blur with the shading panels, so that the building can only be identified as a prison at second glance.
through its small-scale parts forming one unit, the façade stands for society, which is defined by a multitude of individuals.
