Living in a high-density urban environment should not mean having to do without the qualities of a local neighbourhood, smaller streets and squares, a private courtyard or a terrace. This design concept creates a high-density urban structure that unites all the attributes of “urban openness” and, in its volumetric constellations, takes on the scale of a modern, future-proof urban quarter adapted to climate change. The proposal is called “city carpet – city mosaic”, because one and the same basic pattern (main feature) prevails on different levels: building structures arranged around a central courtyard. This pattern can be compared to the arrangement of a pixel landscape. Several pixels form a unit; several block units in turn form the building plot, which together make up a homogeneous city carpet. This two-dimensional basic structure, which generates its own identities in the different urban spheres, reinterprets the perimeter block, upgrades it and strengthens the compactness of the SlowTown.
Extract from the jury report:
… Unlike all the other proposals, an urban structure with a maximum building height of just 37 m is proposed. The perimeter-block typology is found on a large scale across the whole area, both on the outer edges of the site and in the internal division of the individual plots and blocks, creating an unusual but interesting solution. This produces a very clear urban edge towards the surroundings. On the other hand, an introverted city within the city is created, whose central public square is framed by a city mosaic with green inner spaces. The terraced arrangement of the buildings leads to small-scale building structures and open spaces inside, but also allows a more familiar scale.
